Community Outreach to Diversity Organizations

Community Action Inc. of Rock and Walworth Counties is a private, non-profit community service and developmental agency. Residents of our two-county service area from the age of 2 weeks to more than 90 years benefit from our services - which include emergency shelter for the homeless, free health care services for women, assistance with child care, and help figuring out Medicare benefits, among others - we help people become or remain socially and financially self-sufficient.

Haymarket Center was founded on New Year's Eve, 1975, by long-time colleagues in the field of substance abuse, Monsignor Ignatius McDermott and Dr. James West. It was named for its location, near Haymarket Square, where, in the last century, a clash between striking workers and police brought a profound change in society's attitude toward the working poor. The founder's goal here was to bring about as profound a change in the public perception of alcoholism.

The dual mission of the Local Economic and Employment Development (LEED) Council is to promote an economic environment that encourages business growth in the North River Industrial Corridor and to provide skills training and job placements for low-income Chicagoans. Founded in 1982 as an affiliate of the New City YMCA, LEED Council became an independent not-for-profit community development corporation in 2001.
