Job Description

Over the last 20 years, the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) has distinguished itself as one of the fastest-growing art museums in North America. Founded in 1799, it is also the country's oldest continuously operating museum. At its heart is a mission to enrich and transform people's lives by broadening their perspectives, attitudes and knowledge of themselves and the wider world. This temporary Exhibit Designer position requires a minimum seven years of experience in a fast-paced work environment, preferably in a museum or exhibit design office. A working knowledge of fabrication materials, techniques and specialties such as mount-making and related conservation practices are required. Experience in the integration of lighting and media technologies, immersive and/or theatrical techniques is also desirable.

The design position requires proven experience in leading a design development process from concept through final design, and past work that reflects both a refined and dynamic aesthetic. The applicant's experience and references should demonstrate effective communication skills and collaborative engagement with other museum disciplines including curatorial, interpretation and object preparation. The ability to work on several projects simultaneously, to establish respectful interaction across departments and incorporate requested changes by team consensus are also expected.

The applicant should have a working knowledge of a variety of design software programs on the Apple MacIntosh platform-VectorWorks, Sketch Up, Adobe CS6 suite and Microsoft Office software at a minimum. The candidate is expected to develop both presentations and detail- oriented documentation (bidding and to-build drawings and specifications) for PEM's internal fabrication shop and/or outsourced vendors, as well as effectively communication with these technicians during the implementation process.
